PLANNING FOR PEOPLE IN DISASTER PREPAREDNESS
When I speak with individuals from other companies regarding business continuity (BC) and disaster recovery (DR) planning, I like to ask, “What is your objective for having a BC/DR plan?” Common answers given are “To keep systems up and running through a crisis” or “To restore business operations by recovering and restoring systems.” It is interesting that most answers clearly point to the fact that, to date, the focus of planning has centered around protecting the data center and the systems assets within it first and foremost.
While this is unarguably a critical component of BC/DR planning, companies are now starting to realize that recovering their systems from an unplanned interruption or event does not necessarily equate to the resumption of business operations. If business users do not have access to the technology, workspace, and resources they need during that event, consequences of lost worker productivity can significantly jeopardize business resumption plans and cost companies millions of dollars.
Organizations are starting to place renewed emphasis on BC/DR plans that better account for their people, who most consider a company’s most valuable asset. The BC/DR planning specifically centered around the people of an organization is commonly referred to as workforce continuity.
