In an age when cloud computing has become a given, a shift in focus is taking place: Beyond being seen as key to running everyday business, the cloud is also being seen as critical to maintaining organisational resiliency—the ability to bounce back from major or minor disruptions. However, as more companies look to improve business resiliency by looking to the cloud, security remains a chief concern. Top of mind are risks related to security breaches and leaks of confidential information. Both can have dramatic and long-term repercussions on revenue, reputation and the ability to recover quickly. In response, companies are seeking less reactive, more proactive ways to anticipate, prepare for, respond and adapt to events that threaten data security, privacy and their overall resilience. And not just sudden cataclysmic incidents, but those that can take place over time as the organisation changes and IT complexity increases.NEW STUDY points to the importance of resilience in the era of the cloudThe growing interest in resiliency in a cloud-dominated era was recently highlighted in a report by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), the research and analysis division of The Economist Group, the sister company to The Economist newspaper. The report, sponsored by Sungard Availability Services (Sungard AS), shows that addressing cloud computing issues will become a priority for organisations which seek to bolster their organisational resilience. The respondents—including 304 senior-level executives from France, the United Kingdom and the United States and across a range of industries—were asked a series of questions about their organisational resilience and technology adoption. The results of the survey and insights from experts interviewed, the EIU compiled the report, surfaced five building blocks of cloud resilience.
