What’s that old saying? “Build a better mousetrap, and the world will beat a path to your door?” Sungard AS Cloud Recovery - AWS is designed to ensure minimal downtime or data loss in the event of a disaster.
The phrase is credited to Ralph Waldo Emerson, although the exact wording is up for debate. Regardless, the sentiment has caught on over the past 150 years and today, more than 4,400 patents have been issued by the U.S. Patent office for original mousetraps. A “better mousetrap” is a metaphor for any innovation that solves a problem – Scotch tape, revolving doors, Velcro. Identify a problem, observe the world around you, and experiment (repeatedly) for a solution.
“Cloud computing” has been ripe for innovation over the last 12 years, since the term was added to the mainstream vernacular when Amazon.com released its Elastic Compute Cloud product in 2006. Various flavors of cloud have been introduced (public, private, hosted private, hybrid, etc.), and today, there are so many companies offering “cloud services” that Forbes publishes a Forbes Cloud 100 list of new vendors each year.
But when Sungard Availability Services (Sungard AS) introduced an upgraded, fully managed Cloud Recovery solution on Amazon Web Services (AWS) last November, leveraging CloudEndure® for Disaster Recovery, the world beat a path to its door. From Ireland to the U.S., from web service companies to candy manufacturers to private investment firms, organizations immediately tapped Sungard AS for its new AWS managed cloud services.
Why? For one thing, customers could expect to achieve sub one-hour recovery time objectives (RTOs) and recovery point objectives (RPOs) for their x86 workloads. Sungard AS Cloud Recovery – AWS replicates data on Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS), ensuring that AWS instances can be spun up using automated orchestration at the time of test or disaster for minimal downtime or data loss. The service solves for application resiliency, which means automated recovery of protected workloads.
For another, Sungard AS took its industry-leading cloud recovery capabilities (Sungard AS is number one in the market for handling complex recoveries, according to Gartner, Inc.) built on 40 years of recovery expertise and made them available on AWS. This provides customers the flexibility of recovering to Sungard AS recovery cloud targets, or using any AWS site for recovery of protected sources.
But more importantly, Sungard AS gave organizations the freedom to focus on their business, not their IT. In fact, one large financial services customer (who asked to remain anonymous) told us: “The upgraded Cloud Recovery – AWS offering is much simpler to deploy and much more effective with the automations built-in. The introduction of a portal for us to access our replication and at-time-of-test/at-time-of-disaster performance enables us to showcase the results to our clients and auditors, which is critical being a regulated industry. Now we can leave the implementation to Sungard AS, and concentrate on our performance and results with key customers.”
Sungard AS chose to partner with CloudEndure® to meet its hyperscale vision and ensure systems are always available, allowing enterprises to mobilize entire workloads to and across clouds with near-zero downtime and no data loss. Their Live Workload Mobility technology provides continuous, block-level replication and application stack orchestration and supports physical, virtual, and cloud-based infrastructure such as Amazon Web Services as target locations.
Going a step further, Sungard AS built its own server-less management pod on AWS to orchestrate, manage, monitor and report on the service, as well as building in multi-region resiliency to withstand unexpected failures.
Will the innovation continue? Absolutely. “As an Advanced Consulting Partner with AWS, we are now able to more tightly weave our recovery expertise and services into Amazon’s infrastructure to deliver upgraded cloud services that ensure availability,” adds George. This gives Sungard AS access to a range of resources and training to support its customers as they deploy, run and manage applications on AWS.
While some 400 individuals still apply for a mousetrap patent every year, the safer bet for innovation may be with the fully managed Sungard AS solution. By working with AWS, which boasts more than a million customers, a cloud spanning 51 availability zones and 18 geographic regions, and nearly a decade of working closely with organizations ranging from Pinterest to GE and MLB – innovation is virtually unlimited by enabling companies to quickly and easily shift their disaster recovery strategies to the cloud.
