London, United Kingdom: 25 May 2018 – Sungard Availability Services ® (Sungard AS), a leading provider of information availability through managed IT, cloud and recovery services, has been awarded two wins at The BCI European Awards 2018 in the "Most Effective Recovery" and "Consultant of the Year" categories. The awards – run by the Business Continuity Institute – recognize the outstanding contributions of Business Continuity, Risk and Resilience professionals and organisations operating within Europe.
Most Effective Recovery
Sungard AS' was recognised for its work with News UK, following the devastating terrorist attack that took place in London Bridge and Borough Market on Saturday 3rd June 2017. At the time of the attack News UK, a 24-hour organisation, was busy finalising the Sunday editions of The Sunday Times and The Sun on Sunday newspapers.
After the police formally declared the event a terror incident, News UK invoked its recovery site with Sungard Availability Services. It transpired that News UK's designated recovery site would be within the area of the police cordon and as such could not be accessed. Sungard AS' rollback capability — designed for wide area incidents like this — enables customers to recover to the next available site, just over half a mile away and was already factored into News UK's business continuity and incident management planning.
Having this strategy in place meant that News UK was able to relocate crucial roles from teams across its newspapers. With the General Election scheduled to take place just a few days later, News UK kept the recovery site on standby for a further week after returning to its own premises on Monday 5th June to see it through such a critical period.
Consultant of the Year
We are also thrilled to announce that former Sungard AS Customer and Advisory Board member, Steve Mellish Hon FBCI, picked up the award for Continuity & Resilience Consultant of the Year. Steve is the founder and director of Mellish Risk & Resilience Limited, a company specialising in risk and business continuity management with an emphasis on collaborative leadership and cultural integration.
Steve gained experience creating and establishing an enterprise-wide business continuity program for Sainsbury's. He was instrumental in creating the company's incident management capability, which responded to more than 60 serious incidents over a period of 12 years.
Steve was a highly valued member of the Sungard Availability Services Customer Advisory Board (CAB). Spanning a wide range of industry sectors, geographic locations and technology usage within the Sungard AS customer base, the CAB's input and insight is vital in ensuring that Sungard AS continues to help customers remain resilient.
Speaking of Sungard AS' success at these awards, Kathy Schneider, Chief Marketing Officer, Sungard Availability Services said:
"The BCI European Awards are a highly respected industry event, and we're proud to be recognised by our peers. These wins demonstrate our continued commitment to deliver the highest standards of service for our customers. More than ever businesses have to remain resilient in the face of huge challenges. We constantly strive to deliver the services and consultancy to facilitate this mindset and work closely with our customers to help them achieve it."
The abbreviation for Sungard Availability Services is ‘Sungard AS’ as cited above. Please use ‘Sungard AS’ when abbreviating the name rather than ‘Sungard’ or ‘SunGard,’ which may confuse the reader with another separate company with a similar name.
