Accelerating Business in the Cloud

Businesses want to achieve goals like increased productivity and cost containment through the use of technology, while simultaneously realising growth and transformational goals such as entering new markets, strengthening customer relationships, and improving the employee experience. IT departments are tasked with supporting these objectives even in the face of recurring challenges, most notably persistent skills shortages in key areas. Essentially, IT must strive to strike and maintain a balance between time, expenses, and risk in order to not only keep the business running, but also contribute to a highly efficient, innovative, and productive business environment.

How can IT effectively adapt its operations to accommodate evolving business needs while also cultivating an environment of innovation? Increasingly, leveraging cloud computing services is a common approach. Beyond the financial advantages afforded by the cloud, several of its core tenets, including increased agility and scalability, provide organisations with an alternative to the traditional IT provisioning model that is better-suited to support digital transformation initiatives. Cloud infrastructure users have already experienced tangible benefits stemming from their usage of these platforms and services ranging from improved productivity and reduced costs to providing better and more differentiated services to their own customers and even entering new markets faster.

To gather data for this report, Sungard Availability Services (Sungard AS) commissioned the Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) to conduct a comprehensive online survey of both IT and business decision makers from private- and public-sector organisations in North America (United States and Canada) and Western Europe (United Kingdom, France, and Ireland). All data cited in this report is from that survey, unless otherwise noted. To qualify for this survey, respondents were required to be either IT or business professionals personally involved with their organisation’s usage of cloud computing services.
