    A snapshot in time: The impact of the wave

    July 1, 2020 | By Sungard AS |

    One of the most famous works of art, THE GREAT WAVE OFF KANAGAWA (popularly known simply as THE WAVE), depicts a plunging breaker wave executed in the form of Japanese woodblock print. An iconic representation of the Edo period, THE WAVE is rich in colour, composition, and symbolism as it portrays not only a powerful oceanic wave, but the rising image of Mount Fuji in the background.

    Waves have fascinated artists, musicians and writers for hundreds of years as they attempt to capture a moment in time, portraying the constantly changing power and movement of the ocean. Perhaps that’s why the Forrester Wave is so aptly named, with its familiar blue-shaded charts analysing products and services of various technology vendors in the software, hardware, and services markets.

    The Forrester Wave is a guide for buyers considering their purchasing options in a technology marketplace. To offer an equitable process for all participants, Forrester follows a publicly available methodology, which is applied consistently across all participating vendors. The report offers two major benefits to clients: a detailed analysis of vendors’ products and services, and an Excel spreadsheet that allows clients to easily compare products and develop custom shortlists according to their own requirements. Participants are classified as Challengers, Contenders, Strong Performers and Leaders.

    Sungard Availability Services (Sungard AS) was listed as a Contender in The Forrester WaveTM: Hosted Private Cloud Services In North America, Q2 2020. Additionally, Sungard AS was listed as a Contender in The Forrester WaveTM: Hosted Private Cloud Services In Europe, Q2 2020. This is the first time Sungard AS met the participation criteria for either report.

    The reports list Sungard AS as one of the major players in the market for HPC services. Classified as a “Contender,” Sungard AS’ position in the middle of the pack on the “Current Offering” axis illustrates that, from a solution perspective, Sungard AS has an offer that fits well in the marketplace.

    Amongst the criteria that each vendor had to meet were the following:

    • a generally available hosted cloud solution;
    • at least two data centres in North America (or Europe);
    • dedicated compute resources;
    • automated, self-service provisioning;
    • real-time or near-real-time resource usage dashboard;
    • default management up to the hypervisor or OS level;
    • significant market adoption and interest.

    Sungard AS Hosted Private Cloud with integrated disaster recovery and managed application services is ideal for complex cloud environments. Organisations using Sungard AS HPC can maintain critical application uptime, with services delivered from resilient and secure Sungard AS production and failover data centres. This allows them to increase recovery readiness, with integrated business continuity from the start and seamless transitions across primary and secondary environments.

    In addition, the company’s Managed Cloud - Hosted Private Cloud solution leverages Dell Technologies compute and storage and VMware NSX virtualisation and micro-segmentation security technologies. This allows Sungard AS to combine the scalability, agility and cost benefits of cloud with the security, control and performance advantages of a fully dedicated environment.

    With Sungard AS HPC solutions, businesses benefit from a one-stop-shop for all cloud computing needs and support for multi-cloud strategies, including private and public cloud deployments. This ensures that both physical and cloud-based environments are highly available and recoverable.

    Features and benefits of Sungard AS Private Cloud include:

    • Customers can quickly deploy the resources they need, when they need them.
    • Managed Cost. Businesses can leverage the ease of subscription-based pricing with the ability to flex up through on-demand consumption.
    • Superior Resiliency. Integrated recovery and backup options can meet the breadth of a company’s availability and recovery demands.
    • Tailored Performance. Customers can choose from multiple storage tiers that allow them to optimise application performance.
    • Governance and Visibility. Companies can control their entire environment from a single self-service portal and gain access to real-time performance reporting.

    Just as every ocean wave is unique, every cloud environment is one-of-a-kind. Fortunately, with studies like the Forrester WAVE, businesses can evaluate the many players with a consistent set of criteria. Perhaps no one summed it up as eloquently as The Beach Boys: “Catch a wave and you’re sittin’ on top of the world.”
