Why compromised data backups are an IT manager’s worst nightmare

What’s the most terrifying Halloween costume you can think of?

Is it “Chucky”? What about “Freddy Krueger”? How about your high school principal, or the lacrosse coach that made you do wind sprints at 7 a.m. on Saturdays?

Sure, those are all scary. But, if you’re an IT manager, it’s unlikely that any of them keep you up at night. No, that horrifying sight belongs to compromised data backups.

Backups are easily among an organization’s most precious assets, as they safeguard sensitive business data from internal and external threats. However, given the sophistication and complexity of today’s cyberattacks, bad actors are now specifically targeting backup data and trying to wipe it out.

Your backups are only as good as your ability to effectively recover them. Unfortunately, backup and recovery are too often treated as separate programmes. Instead, it’s time to update your backup and recovery plans to combine the two. And, remember, traditional DR plans won’t help you recover data after a successful cyberattack – they are different recovery cases.

Backup-based recovery will allow you to use one technology to tackle both backup and disaster recovery (DR), while using cloud-based backup and recovery solutions can add an extra layer of security against cyberattacks, as well as increase your overall resilience.

The last thing your business – and IT manager – needs to deal with in the midst of a disaster is compromised data backups. By addressing your backup and cyber incident response plans, you can prevent a scary situation.
