IT Failure Is Not an Option: Jelly Belly Keeps Rolling Along

    August 28, 2019 | By Admin |

When you manufacture one of America's favorite confections, beloved by a president and a staple in the finest Easter baskets, you know that manufacturing failure is not an option.

Of course, we're talking about Jelly Belly jelly beans. In 1869 in Belleville, Illinois, Gustav Goelitz and his family – owners of the iconic Jelly Belly Candy Company (then operating under the family name Goelitz) – started on their candy making journey. The company has run consistently since 1898, and though Jelly Belly® jelly beans didn't get their start until 1976, today, the company sells its famous confection in more than 80 countries. The company has shipped three and a half tons of jelly beans to the nation's capital for President Reagan's inauguration, and supplied the first jelly beans in space. Today, Jelly Belly Candy Company rolls out these delectable four-calorie delights in 100 flavors at a rate of 1,680 per second.

A lot has changed since the 1800s, from ingredients to manufacturing techniques to information technology – but Jelly Belly keeps rolling with the changes. For example, to keep up with global demand, Jelly Belly opened a manufacturing plant in Thailand to supply international markets. This bold step led to an increased interest in cloud technology, since the new facility ties back into IT infrastructure housed at its headquarters in the U.S.

Jelly Belly's IT team knew the company needed to minimize risk and adapt to disruptive events by embedding resiliency into their environment. An application outage would limit their ability to manufacture Jelly Belly jelly beans or fulfill orders, potentially damaging their sweet reputation. They turned to Sungard Availability Services (Sungard AS), a leader in resilient and recoverable IT, for a comprehensive disaster recovery (DR) plan that would make their business and IT operations more available, safe and agile.

"We were less concerned about the technology itself. We just wanted a cost-effective, fully managed solution to ensure disaster resilience," said Dan Rosman, Vice President of IT for Jelly Belly. "We didn't have an in-house cloud team in place and our DR capabilities and legacy IT were due for an upgrade."

Jelly Belly needed a provider who could give them the right guarantees (Service Level Agreements), and with whom they could share the accountability and risk of a DR solution. In addition, they wanted a solution that allowed them to invest elsewhere in the business, without having to build and maintain their own datacenter. They found the perfect partner in Sungard AS.

The Solution – a Winning Combination of Flavors

Sungard AS' Cloud Recovery – AWS solution lets customers combine the power of a hyperscale cloud with the IT resiliency expertise of Sungard AS into a complete recovery solution. This includes onboarding, implementation and ongoing monitoring and management, coupled with the automation and orchestration expertise Sungard AS has developed to achieve efficiency, speed and customer satisfaction.

With the best ingredients from Amazon Web Services (AWS), Sungard AS merged its 40-year recovery experience to build a service providing a clear advantage over do-it-your technologies, leaving customers to focus on their critical business application needs while relying on Sungard AS to deliver resiliency.

Cloud Recovery – AWS is a managed DRaaS solution, negating the need for AWS or in-house recovery skills and providing immediate, improved resiliency, with a four-hour Recovery Time Objective (RTO) SLA. The service can protect workloads hosted on premises in a customer's data center or within another AWS Region, and then recover them to the customer's desired AWS Region.

With Sungard AS, Jelly Belly gets a fully managed, cloud-based recovery solution on a secure, enterprise-class platform leveraging AWS. Cloud-based recovery costs significantly less than traditional replication solutions, and services can be tiered to address a range of RTOs and RPOs (Recovery Point Objectives).

Sungard AS replicated Jelly Belly's data from its main datacenter to the AWS platform. The steady-state replication RPO is less than 15 minutes and has 30 to 60 point-in-time copies to roll back in case of a failure. The protected servers are organized into protection groups and boot-order prioritized to enable a contiguous recovery experience in case of an emergency. In the unlikely event of a disaster, the Sungard AS team will recover Jelly Belly's data, boot up the instances and make the necessary network changes for business applications to be recovered on AWS.

The Sungard AS solution comprises Cloud Recovery – AWS encompassing several key phases of onboarding services, from initial design through configuration, implementation and testing, to availability of full recovery of production servers running within the AWS Cloud.

    The Result? A Sweet Success!

Today Jelly Belly works in partnership with Sungard AS to manage its IT recovery risk. Together, the companies have successfully performed numerous recovery tests, ensuring that their plans work as expected and that Jelly Belly can recover critical data after a disruption. Jelly Belly pays a lower ongoing monthly rate while taking advantage of award-winning recovery technology – without impacting its revenue-generating initiatives.

Not only that, but Jelly Belly receives proven management capabilities for its cloud infrastructure that would be difficult, time-consuming and expensive to deliver in-house.

Sungard AS' disaster recovery heritage gave Jelly Belly the confidence that it could deliver fully resilient, recoverable IT for business resilience. More importantly for Jelly Belly, customers all over the world can rest assured that their favorite Jelly Belly confections will be available whenever they want them.
