Planning a journey of any type can be an exhilarating experience. For some people, the destination is more interesting than the journey; they focus on the goal or the milestones of the expedition to set their direction. But to others, the journey is what it’s all about. They enjoy the “life” that happens along the way, the story that unfolds while you prepare to reach the destination. Tennis great Arthur Ashe put it like this: “Success is a journey, not a destination. The doing is often more important than the outcome.”
For businesses, planning the journey to cloud transformation with Amazon Web Services (AWS) can be just as exciting. Sungard Availability Services views this type of journey as a chance to use a roadmap called the AWS Cloud Transformation Maturity Model, or CTMM, to map the maturity of an IT organization’s process, people, and technology capabilities as they move through the four stages of the journey to AWS Cloud: project, foundation, migration, and optimization.
The objective of the CTMM is to help enterprise IT organizations understand the significant challenges they might face as they adopt AWS, while learning best practices and taking on activities to handle those challenges. This CTMM also helps businesses recognize the signs of maturity or expected outcomes to gauge their maturity and readiness at every point.
Along this journey, Sungard AS can help organizations improve their resiliency posture through the extension of its Data Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) portfolio, applying over 40 years of experience in successfully recovering customers. What’s more, Sungard AS is an AWS Managed Service Provider (MSP) Partner, meeting the criteria of a rigorous independent audit while focusing on the delivery of resilient, recoverable IT solutions on AWS.
At each stage, recoverability and resiliency of workloads is paramount. You can learn more about these stages in our new podcast series “Not All Clouds Are The Same,” which includes insights such as:
- The project stage begins the transformation journey for your organization. Organizations in this stage usually have limited knowledge of cloud services and the potential costs and benefits, and typically don’t have a centralized cloud adoption strategy. This is where Sungard AS steps in. Getting through this initial stage is crucial to the ultimate success for an organization’s journey to the cloud. The outcomes realized, and lessons learned here, lay the strong foundation for broader cloud adoption at all organizational levels.
- The foundation stage is characterized by a company’s intent to move forward with migration to AWS with executive sponsorship, some experience with AWS services, and partially trained staff. During this stage, your environment is assessed, all contractual agreements are in place, and a plan is created for the migration. The migration plan that Sungard AS builds for a company details the business case, in-scope workloads, approach to migration, resources required, and the timeframe.
- The migration stage is where an organization matures overall, with governance, technical, and operational foundations in place to effectively and efficiently migrate targeted applications. Significant risks exist at this stage, such as project delays, budget overruns, and application failures. If the appropriate migration strategies, tools, and methods are not implemented, there is also a risk that confidence and support in the project will diminish. Sungard AS can help with the building blocks of the migration, implementation of the operational tools and the mass migration and completion of in-scope.
- And finally, the optimization stage is the fourth stage in the transformation maturity model. To reach this stage, an organization has successfully migrated all targeted application workloads (that is, it is all-in on AWS) and is efficiently managing the AWS environment and service delivery process. This phase is an ongoing loop, not a destination, and Sungard AS stays with its customers all the way. The objective of this phase is to optimize existing processes by lowering costs, improving service, and extending AWS value deeper into the organization. The focus on continuous service improvement enables businesses to realize the true value of utility computing, where they constantly seek optimization and addition of newer AWS services to drive cost and performance efficiencies.
The AWS cloud transformation journey can be both confusing and complicated, but Sungard AS can help organizations simplify every step. And you know what ancient Chinese philosopher Lao-Tzu once said: A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.
